Startup Weekend returns for its 3rd Year in Davao City

by

The 3rd annual Startup Weekend Davao will be held in the Ateneo de Davao University, Roxas Avenue on August 1 – 3, 2014.

The weekend-long bootcamp on tech and business collaboration gathers businessmen, software developers, web designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts to share and pitch ideas, form teams, build products and launch a startup.

The 2012 and 2013 events sold out, and have been a huge success for Davao’s tech community, with over 100 attendees each from the city and from far as far away as General Santos, Koronadal, and other nearby cities in Davao region.

“Since it’s initial run here in Davao City, our team’s vision had always been to build a strong, supportive and synergetic startup community. After participating and facilitating a number of tech community events here and in nearby areas, we are thrilled that the Startup Weekend Davao has gradually achieved this vision,” said Dulce Lada, CEO of Crea8tech Solutions and head organizer of the all 3 Startup Weekends here in Davao.

For the 3rd Startup Weekend Davao, known names from the IT industry will be on board as judges such as Joey Gurango, President of Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA) and Founder, CEO & CTO of Gurango Software; Ravi Agarwal, Founder & CEO at engageSPARK and Angel Investor; Rhett Jones, CEO of Synacy; Jean-Patrick Bisson, Co-Founder of ClickingLabs, Harm Rietjens, Co-Founder of Caresharing and Wit Holganza, President of National ICT Confederation of the Philippines (NICP).

Mentors play a vital role in any Startup Weekend. The one-on-one advice given to teams, can be invaluable and a key factor in their growth as a startup. For this year, we have top-notch coaches who will commit their time to mentor our teams such as Simplicio Jison Jr., President & CEO of Accelerate Desk; Yosuke Fukada, Co-Founder and CEO at YOYO Holdings, Pte. Ltd.; Ray Rubio, CEO at CubePixels; Marvin Consuegra, Designer at Lightning Web Apps; Pia Bernal, Social Enterprise Investments Manager & Head of Communications, Kickstart Ventures, Inc., Ted Padova, Dean, School of Visual Arts at Philippine College of Technology; Wesley Chiongbian, CEO and Founder of Mynimo.com, Gilmar Padua, CEO of Infinityhub.com; Jason Torres, CTO at Proudcloud and John NL Leyson, Co-founder at HUMOUNO, Inc.

Angel Abella, co-manager of the Google Business Groups – Davao, and co-organizer of the event, says, “Startup Weekend is one of the best opportunities to try out what it’s like to be an entrepreneur. This year, Startup Weekend Davao is creating an intersection between the social impact and technology communities, and encourages more women to participate. With more support from various entities, it will be incredible to see what the tech and business community can do together to help those with a focused social mission.”

Because this is a global event, SW is also happening in these cities on the same weekend, Bucaramanga, Colombia, San Fernando Valley, CA, USA, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Davao City, Philippines.
